Oh, labareda te encostou
Lá vai, lá va,
labareda Labareda te queimou
Lá vai, lá vai, labareda
Labareda te matou
Lá vai, lá vai, labareda
Oi, te matou de tanto amor
Lá vai, lá vai, labareda
Labareda
O teu nome é mulher
Quem te quer
Quer perder o coração
Rosa ardente
Bailarina da ilusão
Mata a gente
Mata de paixão
Labareda
Fogo que parece amor
Tua chama
É a chama de uma flor
Labareda
Quem te vê assim dançar
Em teus braços
Logo quer queimar

The diva of Salvador, Bahia returns
Virginia Rodrigues

"The new voice in Brazil." The New York Times
"The soul on display here is that of
contemporary Brazil, embodied by Virginia Rodriques' extraordinary range and
warm, solid voice." Rolling Stone
Until recently, Virginia Rodriques was the
hidden star of Salvador, Bahia, the city considered to be the heart of
Brazilian music in which African and Portuguese influences mingle. Newly found
acclaim for her otherworldly contralto voice and her roots-oriented approach to
traditional sambas has propelled her into the international limelight. With
remarkable vocal tone and breathtaking range, she "sings with soulful
spirituality and grooves with heavenly grace" (Entertainment Weekly).
Rodriques was discovered by Caetano
Veloso, in her hometown, Salvador, Bahia, the heart of Brazilian music, as part
of a theater production of the Olodum Theatre, a company which recruits
performers from the poorest neighborhoods to create street theatre. It was this
discovery that resulted in the recording and release of Sol Negro and
introduced her to the international music community.
"…a singer with a stout angelic voice from the
Brazilian state of Bahia. …[Rodriques] conjures a timeless, mystical Brazil
where nature and spirit worlds meet and where the songs of the Afro-Brazilian
pantheon share the purity of Gregorian chant." The New York Times
Tonight she will be performing selections
from her new CD Mares Profundos, her
first recording for Deutsche Grammophon's new label edge music. Virginia
Rodrigues, her mentor Caetano Veloso, and producer/guitarist Luiz Brasil have
chosen to revisit a classic song-cycle written by two Brazilian musical
legends: the great poet Vinícius de Moraes ‚ a lyricist immortalized through
his verses for bossa nova classics such as "A Garota De Ipanema"
("Girl from Ipanema") and "Desafinado" as well as the
musical and film soundtrack of Orfeo Negro "Black Orpheus" and Baden
Powell, a guitar virtuoso and composer who was more at home in samba than in
bossa nova. Searching for new musical challenges, the two decided to go to
Salvador/Bahia to explore the Afro-Brazilian culture which, at that time, was
still almost unknown outside Brazil. The result was a collection of songs they
called Afro-sambas and which they recorded in 1966 for Philips.
Virginia Rodrigues, who is proud of her Afro-Bahian
and African roots and a fierce critic of Brazil's camouflaged racism,
approaches these Afro-sambas in her own way and with enormous sensitivity.
A rare and beautiful treat
for Northern audiences.
